Residents Not Internet Literacy

Ministry of Communications and Informatics (Depkominfo) estimates that there are currently more than 200 million people in Indonesia who are illiterate internet.

"Therefore, we aim to be up to the year 2015 the number of internet users have been half the population or about 117 million people," said Director of the Directorate General of Empowerment Telematics Telematics Applications Badri Depkominfo Azkar in Palangkaraya, Thursday.

Azkar Badri said that current conditions of the entire population of Indonesia, amounting to around 230 million people, only 20 million of them who have got internet access.

While approximately 200 million to 210 million other people still can enjoy internet access as well as regional constraints of limited knowledge.

So to complete the target of the next five years, every year at least required the expansion of internet access to be able to reach over 20 million inhabitants.

"It's a long trip, and now the government has tried to awaken the Palapa Ring could include Papua to Aceh. In addition, there are also programs to ring the village, the village has good internet, and other programs," he explained.

Depkominfo also asked for commitment and the "political will" of local governments to support the expansion of Internet access that local governments know better considering the condition of residents in their respective regions.

In addition, support from private sector developers and operators are required to succeed in a target range of Internet access up to 50 percent of the population in Indonesia.

Azkar also expected, 50 per cent target Internet access is not achieved with unequal conditions between regions, such as prioritizing only densely populated area.

"For example, in Central Kalimantan, the interior must also be able to reach the target 50 percent of its citizens," he added. (AntaraNews)
